'The chief town of the Prussian Province of Brandenburg and the second residential town of the Kaiser, is situated eighteen miles south-west of Berlin. Sans Souci, the favourite residence of Frederick the Great, one of a number of palaces in Potsdam, is surrounded by a splendid park and magnificent terrace gardens, adorned with many examples of sculpture.'
