'Sam House, The Patriotic Publican', 1822. Portrait of the 'political publican of Soho' in London, holding a clay pipe and a bowl inscribed 'Fox for Ever'. Sam House kept 'The Intrepid Fox' tavern at the corner of Peter St and Wardour St, named after British Whig statesman Charles James Fox. 'In the Westminster election of 1784 he kept open house at his own cost. The house was also celebrated for its connections with the beautiful Duchess of Devonshire in her active canvassing in the cause of Fox.'
