An uprising on the island of Formosa, 1930. 'Un Soulèvement dans l'Île de Formose'. 'Revolting natives attack a Japanese school and kill twenty young girls'. A sensationalist depiction of an incident during the Japanese occupation of Formosa (now Taiwan). In October 1930, indigenous people rose up against Japanese colonial forces in response to long-term oppression. 134 Japanese, including women and children, were killed in an attack on the the Musyaji Elementary School. The harsh response of the Japanese authorities was unprecedented. Front cover of "Le Petit Journal Illustré". [France, 9 November 1930]
