Gertrude Ederle receiving advice from her trainer Jabez Wolff, 1926, (1935). 'Miss Gertrude Ederle [1905-2003], the young American swimmer, was the first woman to swim the Channel [between England and France]. She also established a new record by swimming from France to England on August 6 [1926] in 14 hours 31 minutes, thus beating the previous record by about two hours.'
