'Frozen Lake, Foot of James's Peak', 1874. Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, USA. It was formerly known as James Peak, in honor of Edwin James who climbed to the summit in 1820. 'James's Peak comes next in our route, and at its foot we see one of the pretty frozen lakes that are scattered all over the range. It is a picturesque and weird yet tenderly sentimental scene...The surface is as smooth as a mirror, and reflects the funereal foliage and snowy robes of the slopes as clearly. It is as chaste as morning, and we can think of ice-goblins chasing underneath the folds of virgin snow that the pale moon-light faintly touches and bespangles'.
