'Cathedral Rock - Side-view', 1872. Rock formation reminiscent of a cathedral, West Virginia, USA: 'we may vary the scene indefinitely by changing position. Thus, from a point a little higher and more distant, the stupendous height of the spire is more manifest, while a movement to the right develops a second group of pinnacles behind the first, and the change of perspective invests the whole scene with a wilder and more unearthly character'.
