'London in Peril of Starvation', 1912, (1933). London dockers went on strike when Lord Devonport, head of the Port of London Authority, refused to agree to their demands. Ben Tillett, socialist trade union leader and politician, said: 'Hunger and poverty have driven the dockers and shipworkers to this present resort'. Fears of resulting food shortages caused the army to be brought in to guard convoys of supplies. From "The Pageant of the Century". [Odhams Press Ltd, 1933]
