'John', (1166-1216), 1830. John (1166-1216) King of England from 1199 until his death in 1216. Nicknamed John Lackland because he was not expected to inherit significant lands. The baronial revolt at the end of his reign led to the sealing of Magna Carta. He remains a recurring character within Western culture, primarily as a villain in the stories of the Robin Hood legends. From "Biographical Illustrations", by Alfred Howard. [Thomas Tegg, R. Griffin and Co., J. Cumming, London, Glasgow and Dublin, 1830]
