Female Figurine, c. 400-100 BC. Burials from ancient villages near Chupicuaro, Guanajuato contain hundreds of pottery offerings. These include brightly coloured vessels and solid figurines decorated with appliqué and incision. The cheerful, informal figurines were probably intended to provide the dead with companionship, and to remind them of their loved ones. The body, face, and coiffure of this female figure are formed of flattened clay. Small rolls and pellets are added to create the facial features and ornaments; incised markings and mineral pigments are the final decorative touches. This carefully crafted figurine is extraordinarily large and exceptionally well preserved.
