Hookah Bowl, c. 1700. The striking poppy motifs surrounding the body of this hookah bowl may reference its use for the smoking of opium. The patterns were applied with gold paint on the blown glass bowl; the neckpiece was made separately and attached. Cobalt was used to create the deep blue hue.
