Légende
Plate, c. 1500-1510. The main form of pottery in northern Italy, in centers such as Padua, Mantua, Ferrara, and Bologna, was incised slipware. Reddish-bodied earthenware was coated with a pale-coloured slip and decorated by scratching away part of the slip to reveal the darker body beneath. Although produced in the same kilns as Maiolica ware, it is not, technically speaking, Maiolica because it is not tin-glazed.
