Standing Figure of a Beauty, c. 1690. This woman?s red lips, white skin, black hair, and sash were considered the height of beauty in her time. Her fashionable, brightly coloured garment was created by brushing enamel onto pre-fired porcelain. This colourful, floral aesthetic was characteristic of Kakiemon ware, a type of ceramic produced in the village of Arita. Located near the port of Imari, ceramics from Arita were exported to Europe via Dutch traders, but were also popular among Japanese collectors.
