The General Post-Office; Packing the Indian Mail, 1844. Workers in the main post office at St Martin's Le Grand in London: 'the Foreign and Ship Letter Department, where all letters and papers for foreign and colonial ports are assorted, packed, and dispatched. The India and other mails are made up in this room. The papers are packed in large strong white leather sacks, about, as tall as a man, and of proportionate width, the name, as "Smyrna", "Sydney", "Hong Kong", "Demerara",&c., painted upon them.
