Légende
The Convocation in the Theatre, 1844. Degree ceremony in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. 'Towards eleven o'clock the procession entered the theatre, the Vice-Chancellor being loudly cheered: then followed the noblemen, the heads of the houses, doctors, and proctors...The convocation was then opened by the Vice- Chancellor, and the degrees were conferred; the gentlemen being introduced, with appropriate speeches, by Dr. Phillimore, the Regius Professor of Civil Law. The engraving represents the superb theatre, and this most stirring scene. The English prize poem, the " Battle of the Nile," was vociferously applauded'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I.
