Thames Grand Regatta, 1844. Racing on the River Thames at Putney in south-west London. 'Saturday, the third and last day's matches were attended by a very numerous assemblage of persons, amongst whom were many of rank and fashion: after the two or three first heats, the towing-path was almost impassable, and the river was so covered with pleasure- boats and other craft, that the police found much difficulty in keeping the course clear'.
