Scene from "Harlequin and Johnny's Ride", at Astley's, 1844. London stage production at Astley's Royal Amphitheatre. 'The harlequinade here consisted of a version of "Johnny Gilpin's Ride; or, the Black Witch of Edmonton," with a sort of necromantic opening, followed by some comic scenes of average merit; the main incident being the celebrated Citizen's ride, the role filled by "the popular equestrian, Mr. Wells"...The effect of the pantomime was, probably, somewhat anticipated by the first piece of the evening - "The Royal Fox- Hunt," which is a veritable treat, and a cleverly managed spectacle throughout'.
