Procession in honour of the late General Jackson, at New York, 1845. US president Andrew Jackson died on 8 June 1845. 'On the morning of Sunday...the General had swooned, and, for a time, was supposed to be dead, but he soon after revived and lived till evening. During the forenoon he gathered around his bedside the members of his household, whom he admonished most affectionately to Cherish Christianity, to be kind and loving to each other, to love their country and protect its institutions'. Jackson had made his fortune through the exploitation of enslaved Africans forced to work on his cotton plantation in Tennessee. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII.
