New foreign baggage warehouse, St. Katherine's Docks, 1845. Facilities by the River Thames in London, 'for the landing, examination, and delivery, of the luggage of passengers, to or from the Continent; as well as the landing of foreign cattle, fruit, and other imports...The apartments are a large General Waiting-Room, with a separate one for the use of ladies; both being in direct communication with the New Baggage Warehouse. This room...contains three separate "loopholes," or "scuttles," each of which is furnished with the necessary appliances for the expeditious housing of luggage; it has also a monstre counter, about 120 feet long, furnishing ample room for as many as six landing-waiters...for the examination of baggage...The whole is well warmed and ventilated, and brilliantly lit with gas'.
