The Martyr's Obelisk, Edinburgh - (from the parapet of North Bridge), 1845. The Political Martyrs' Monument commemorates five political reformists from the late 18th and early 19th centuries: Thomas Muir, Thomas Fyshe Palmer, William Skirving, Maurice Margarot and Joseph Gerrald. The monument, in the Old Calton Burial Ground on Calton Hill, was designed by Thomas Hamilton and erected in 1844. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII.
