Lambton Castle, 1844. View of the the ancestral seat of the Lambton family, the Earls of Durham, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham. It was built between 1820 and 1828 around Harraton Hall, a 17th-century mansion, by John Lambton, first Earl of Durham and one-time Governor General of Canada. The castle was designed by architects Joseph Bonomi the Elder and his son Ignatius and built in the style of a Norman castle. 'It stands on the north bank of the river Wear, and occupies the site of Harraton Hall, formerly the residence of the D'Arcys and Hedworths'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V.
