This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This document is receipt for payment made by Mr. Edward Rouzee of the sum four (4) dollars and fifty (50) cents in full for the hire of an enslaved man owned by James Thomas for nine days to tread wheat by the estate of the late John Rouzee. The document is signed with an 'X' for James Thomas and witnessed by Richard Rouzee. The reverse reads "Thomas to Rouzee son / $4.50 / 16th Nov 1826." The document consists of a single half-size page; handwritten text in black ink on both sides.
