The Mall, Westminster, Greater London Authority, 1953. Looking along the Mall towards Buckingham Palace, showing decorations for the coronation of Elizabeth II, including three Coronation Arches over the road and decorative standards topped by crowns positioned on either side of the road, with pedestrians walking along the side of the road. Four steel Coronation Arches, designed by Eric Bedford, were erected over the Mall for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953. The arches featured metalwork crowns and fan-shaped designs, and were floodlit at night. The arches were linked by lines of standards mounted with golden crowns. From each standard were hung four scarlet banners, not shown in this photograph, bearing the royal cypher 'E R'.
