Gordon Cooper and capsule on deck, Pacific Ocean, 1963. Recovery personnel bring the Mercury space capsule "Faith 7" onboard the recovery ship U.S.S. Kearsarge with American astronaut Gordon Cooper still inside. Once secured on deck, Cooper jettisoned the Capsule's hatch allowing for his removal. Major Cooper successfully completed the Mercury-Atlas 9 orbital flight, as part of the final manned space mission of NASA's Project Mercury program.
