High Street, City of Portsmouth, 1930s. Looking south-west along the south side of the High Street from the junction with Lombard Street, showing the Dolphin Hotel and the Museum and Art Gallery on the left. This photograph shows buildings between numbers 40-47 High Street in Portsmouth, most of which were later destroyed by bomb damage in the Second World War. The Museum and Art Gallery, in the Doric style Guildhall (built 1837), was destroyed by a bombing raid on 10th January 1941. However the building to the left of it, the Dolphin Hotel, survived the war virtually intact. On the right hand side of the photograph is the office of Charpentier Ltd, printers, at 46 High Street.
