Légende
Jealousy, the Rival, 1803. 'Does not this drawing with its foreground arrangement of profoundly expressive figures become something greater than the subject might suggerst? Perhaps there is a French influence here. With rather a sense of worship, Rowlandson drew well-formed young women that were pleasing of feature, too. He is more serious in this subject than usual, and there is every indication that, when he so desired, he could paint a creditable picture full of the qualities which a conventional world might expect. Everything that an important painting should be is contained in this little drawing'. From "The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc., New York, 1947]
