The Six Immortals of Poetry, Abbreviated, c. 1795. Three of the most beautiful courtesans in the Yoshiwara pleasure district are depicted, each with a male guest. Their beauty is an analogy for fine poems of the past, six of which, one by each Immortal, are inscribed above. Narihira's most famous love poem is on the right, and a work by Ono no Komachi is on the left.
