View showing the chapel which was '...excavated in the spring of 1825, when was discovered a well underneath a...Norman arch on the south side of the chapel...St. Joseph's Chapel was finished both within and without, in its forms and ornaments, with the best skill, the nicest art, and the most correct taste; and presented to the eye, probably, the choicest and most perfect specimen in the kingdom of an Anglo-Norman ecclesiastical edifice....[The architect] covered the whole surface with small semicircular arches, interlacing each other; and here, after having ornamented his arches, above and below, with uniform fillets, or mouldings, of the richest and lightest zigzag pattern...'.
