The Fire-Brigade, 1850. Fire in Lambeth, south London: 'In a very short period the window-frames at the back of the houses in the York-road caught fire, and berore any effective means could be adopted to prevent it, the whole range numbered 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, were enveloped in flame...The firemen worked bravely; but the extent of the catastrophe was appalling'.
