H.M. 50-Gun Frigate "Nankin", to be launched this day, Saturday, 1850. 'This noble and beautiful specimen of naval architecture...is built from the designs of Mr. O. U. Lang, the assistant shipwright at the Royal Dockyard [in Woolwich, London]...A considerable space has been fitted up as booths on both sides and under the bows of the vessel...to afford the friends of the Admiralty and the authorities...a fine view of the launch. The figure-head is a representation, carved by Mr. Hellyer, of Vice-Admiral Sir William Parker...Commander-in-Chief of the fleet at present assembled on the coast of Greece. The vessel presents a very fine appearance, and her weather and main decks have been payed with Jeffery's marine glue. The Nankin is to be christened by Miss Parker, daughter of the gallant admiral whose bust is so appropriately placed at the bows of the vessel'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
