Dr. Wiseman, Appointed by the Pope Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, 1850. Portrait of Nicholas Wiseman, Cardinal of the Catholic Church and first Archbishop of Westminster. 'The Roman Catholics, however, seem to have misunderstood the English people...if we may judge from the impertinent nomination just made by the Pope, and by the complacent glorification of Cardinal Wiseman (the soi-disant Archbishop of Westminster) in his pastoral letter, which was read in the Roman Catholic churches of this metropolis [London] on Sunday last'.
