Lieutenant-General Joseph von Radowitz, 1850. Portrait of Prussian statesman, general and Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph von Radowitz. 'All parties suspect him; the democrats assert he is a disguised Jesuit; the Prussian Nationalists say he is a traitor sold to Austria; at Vienna he is hated as a too zealous Prussian: the Constitutionalists have broken with him; the ultra-Royalists fear him; and yet, amid all these jealousies and animosities, he keeps his power and influence unimpaired even by his fall from office. He is a soldier with the education of a priest, and a statesman whose acts are tinged by the smaller wiles of the diplomatist. He has great powers and acquirements; he is learned, eloquent, and imaginative; yet, on the whole, his career is a failure...He was appointed Foreign Minister on the 26th of September, and resigned office on the 2d of November'.
