Wreck of the "Orion" at High Water, 1850. The Orion paddle steamer struck a submerged rock near Portpatrick Lighthouse, Wigtownshire, Scotland. 41 of the 200 passengers on board died. View showing '...the wreck, as it appeared on the following day, at high water...the body of Mrs Smith was recovered on Saturday, with a gold watch upon it, and a purse containing twenty-four sovereigns. The body of Mr. Francis Murrach late of Alloa, was likewise recovered the same day. On Monday morning, the body of Mr. Hume, wool merchant, Glasgow, was found near the wreck; and the body of a woman and child, supposed to have been deck passengers, were brought up from the cabin on Sunday. The body of Master Martin, son of the Liverpool manager of the company, has likewise been found'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
