The Highland Coronach - painted by Mr. M'Ian, 1850. 'Exhibition of the National Institution, in Regent-street, [London]. It is a touching scene. 76 [in the catalogue]. "The Highland Coronach." Niel Macdonald, son of the Laird of Achtreachtan, "indweller in Glencoe," and one of the "most stiff-necked of the Popish clan Donald," was "slaine by certain righteous men," friends of Master John Nevoy, preacher, who was instructed to "teache the uncivil natives of the Hielands and Isles both Inglische and Godliness."...whilst hunting on the hills between Glencoe and Fasnacloigh, [he] was "shot unto death." His brother escaped at the time of the massacre of Glencoe, and...subsequently assumed the name of Bhlar - a field (of battle) - or Blair. The present member [of parliament] for Bolton is one of his descendants. "Coronach," in the Gaelic, signifies "Lament".' From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
