Bath, 1850. View of the city of Bath in Somerset 'One of the most prominent of these points of attraction [along the Great Western railway line] is the handsome city of Bath, long noted for the beauty of its buildings, which consist almost entirely of stone, and present a finer appearance than any other city in England. It lies in a valley divided by the river Avon, which has been made navigable as far as Bristol...Its public buildings and large hotels provide splendid accommodation; the Assembly Rooms are among the finest in the kingdom; and the theatre, one of the best of its size, is a sort of school for the metropolitan stage. Our Artist has shown the city at the most picturesque point; with its crescents and churches, and the soft-flowing Avon, and the distant Somerset hills'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
