Charles Devens of Massachusetts. 1865 and 1880. Hon. Charles Devens of Mass. Atty Gen. Hayes Cabinet, between 1865 and 1880. [General in the Union Army, lawyer, jurist, statesman. While United States Marshal for Massachusetts in 1851, he was called upon to remand the fugitive slave, Thomas Sims, to slavery, and did so much against his personal desire. He subsequently attempted in vain to purchase Sims's freedom, and later appointed him to a position in the US Department of Justice in Washington].
