Hon. E. Degener of Texas, between 1860 and 1875. [German-born politician. During the American Civil War, the slave-holding state of Texas joined the Confederacy. Degener remained loyal to the Union, and was persecuted by the Confederates for this loyalty. Two of his sons were murdered by the Confederates in the Nueces massacre].
