Russian Prisoners, 1854. Russian women in Britain during the Crimean War. 'The wives of the Russian soldiers, who have been brought to England along with their husbands, are all plainly but neatly dressed, the majority having coloured handkerchiefs round their heads, and otherwise pretty much resembling the Bavarian broom girls who find their way to this country. Several of the women are of the Jewish persuasion'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
