[Pierre Charles L'Enfant was a French-American military engineer who designed the basic plan for Washington, D.C. He died in poverty in 1825, and was originally buried at the Green Hill farm in Chillum, Prince George's County, Maryland. After pressure from the French ambassador to the United States, he was was re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia].
