Medallic Portrait of Sir J. Franklin, by David, 1854. '...a medallic Portrait of the lamented Sir John Franklin, executed in bronze by M. David'. In 1845, British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin led an ill-fated expedition in an attempt to traverse the Northwest Passage. His ships became icebound off King William Island in what is now Nunavut, where he died in June 1847. The icebound ships were abandoned ten months later and the entire crew died, from causes such as starvation, hypothermia, and scurvy. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
