John Carroll, Statue At Georgetown University, Dedicated May 4, 1912 - Chief Justice White And Cardinal Gibbons At Dedication, 1912 May 4. [John Carroll, archbishop of Baltimore, was the founder of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He was the first bishop and archbishop in the United States. The bronze sculpture by Jerome Connor was unveiled in 1912 with an elaborate three-day ceremony. In attendance were Edward Douglass White (3rd left) and Cardinal James Gibbons (centre), as well as other dignitaries, bishops and high-ranking clergy, members of Congress, judges, the Attorney General, and distinguished alumni].
