Légende
The late Mr. Charles Kemble, from a marble bust, by Timothy Butler, 1854. British actor. 'His first appearance upon the London stage was in the character of Malcolm, in "Macbeth," which he performed at Drury-lane, in the winter of 1794, continuing for two years to assume parts equally subordinate. On account of the illness of his brother John, during the run of the opera of "Mahmoud," Charles was called upon to supply his place at so short a notice, that he was obliged to take the book with him upon the stage; when feeling his confidence strengthened, and his emulation awakened, he threw aside the book, and performed the character with spirit and extraordinary success'.
