Sir Edmund Lyons, G.C.B., Rear-Admiral of the British Fleet, in the Black Sea - from a photograph by Claudet, 1854. Officer of the Royal Navy during the Crimean War: 'Captain Lyons witnessed, in May, 1832, Ibrahim Pacha's bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre; and early in 1833 Captain Lyons attended King Otho and the Bavarian Regency from Trieste to Greece. He paid the Madagascar off in 1835, was nominated a K.C.H. [Knight Commander of the Royal Guelphic Order], and received the honour of Knighthood. His commission of Rear-Admiral of the White is dated January 14,1850. Sir Edmund Lyons, who has filled the office of Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Athens, was created a Baronet for his civil services in 1840, and a G.C.B. [Grand Cross of the Civil Division of the Order of the Bath] in 1844'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
