'My castle on the Nile', 1901. 'New Song Hits introduced by Williams & Walker's Own Big Co.; Sung by the Great Comedian Bert. Williams, by J. W. Johnson, Bob Cole & Rosamond Johnson'. Bert Williams and George Walker were multi-talented African American showmen of the minstrel era, when black performers were forced to conform to the racist stereotypes expected by white audiences. From a collection of sheet music, some examples of which depict African Americans in a derogatory way. Other examples are songs by white musicians purporting to be black.
