'That's where my money goes', 1900. 'Words by Walter Daniels; music by R.P. Lilly'. A black dock worker plays a banjo seated on a cotton bale as others throw dice by the Mississippi - the implication is that they are lazy. Bottom left is a portrait of the singer Gertrude Cogert. From a collection of sheet music, some examples of which depict African Americans in a derogatory way. Other examples are songs by white musicians purporting to be black.
