'The latch-string's always hanging out for you', 1900. 'Written by Fred J. Hamill, composed by Paul Cohn, as sung by the only Fougere in Round New York in 80 Minutes'. Eugénie Fougère was a French vaudeville and music hall dancer and singer, known for her rendition of the popular 'cakewalk' dance. From a collection of sheet music, some examples of which depict African Americans in a derogatory way. Other examples are songs by white musicians purporting to be black.
