Clergyman and politician Francis Lewis Cardozo was elected Secretary of State in South Carolina, the first African American to hold a statewide office in the United States. Lawyer and politician John S. Leary was one of the first black lawyers in North Carolina, and the first dean of the law school at Shaw University. John Oliver Crosby was the first president of what became the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Edward S. Porter was a physician for the Louisville city sanitary force, the Orphan's home, at an insane asylum, and at Simmons College of Kentucky.
