Document records the efforts of Nancy, apparently a free African-American woman, to recover damages for assault and battery and false imprisonment (servitude) against a Joseph Butler, who '...assaulted the plaintiff and [hit?] then and there beat, bruised wound, took and imprisoned and restrained her of her liberty and held her in servitude...against the law of the land and against will of plaintiff and other injurers [?] the said Joseph Butler [there?] within that term did to the plaintiff to her damage two thousand dollars therefore she brings her suit...'.
