Original receipt for $2000 compensation obtained by Warren L. Nelson for slave Laurens, lost in military service to South Carolina, 1864-10-15. 'Claim No. 140. Columbia, S. C., 15 October 1864. Received of the State of South Carolina two thousand (2,000) dollars, being the amount admitted and advanced by the General Assembly of the said State, upon the claim of T. [or J.] Warren Nelson, for compensation for his slave, named Laurens, lost by reason of the employment of the said slave by the authorities of the Confederate Government upon the military fortifications in this State...' [signed by Nelson, and an attorney].
