Answers to the objections against the proposals of the Royal African Company for settling the trade to Africa in a second letter to a Member of Parliament, 1748-03-31. British government document. The Royal African Company was a mercantile company established by the Royal Stuart family, managed by the Duke of York, to exploit the West African gold fields. It also engaged with the slave trade. Establishments were made with forts and settlements on the West African coast to serve as staging and trading stations. 'The First Objection. Some of you say alledge, That the Company, by valuing their Charter, Forts, Castles, and Property in Africa, at 150,000 l. [£] set too great great a Price upon them. Answer. They who will impartially consider the great Hazard and Expence of sending out from England, to such remote Climates, all Sorts of Materials for erecting such Buildings...'.
