Prospectus for: An essay on colonization, cultivation, commerce, in consequence of a voyage, made with that view, to the western coast of Africa, 1794-12-08. Essay by C. B. Wadstrom. ...'Character and Disposition of the Africans...Colonies in Africa formed on the Principles of Commerce by the Portuguese...Spaniards...French...Dutch...Austrians...New Plan for exploring Africa, by the African Association in London...Description of the British Colony of Sierra Leone...'. A list of directors of the Sierra Leone Company includes abolitionists Henry Thornton MP, Granville Sharp and William Wilberforce. The Sierra Leone Company took over the failed attempt by Sharp to create a colony for the settlement of freed slaves in Africa. The essay became an abolitionist classic that exposed not only the cruelties of slavery but also its economic disadvantages.
